Management Training in Dorset: What Your New Managers Actually Need

You promoted your best person. Of course you did. They were brilliant at the job, the team liked them, and it felt like the obvious next step.

Six months on, they're working later than anyone. They're still doing their old job as well as the new one. They're avoiding the conversation with the team member who keeps turning up late. And somehow every problem still lands on your desk.

If that sounds familiar, you didn't pick the wrong person. Nobody showed them how to lead.

Why good people struggle when they become managers

Being great at the job and being great at leading the people who do the job are two completely different skills.

Most new managers in small businesses get the title, a bit more money and a pat on the back. What they don't get is someone sitting down with them and saying: here's how you run a one-to-one. Here's how you tell someone their work isn't good enough without crushing them. Here's how you stop being everyone's mate and start being their manager, without turning into someone you don't like.

So they do what any of us would. They copy the last manager they had, good or bad. Or they keep their head down and do the work themselves, because it's quicker.

I've seen this from every seat. In 17 years in franchising I supported over 1,000 business owners and helped develop more than 50 leaders. The pattern was the same every single time. The people who struggled weren't short on talent. They were short on someone showing them how.

What new managers actually need

  • The difficult conversation. How to have it early, kindly and clearly, before it turns into a big one.
  • Delegation that sticks. So they stop doing everyone else's job as well as their own.
  • One-to-ones people don't dread. On either side of the table.
  • Feedback that lands. Not the compliment sandwich everyone can see coming.
  • Leading the people who used to be their mates. Probably the hardest bit, and the one nobody talks about.
  • Confidence. Honestly, this is the big one. Most new managers already know what they should do. They just don't feel ready to do it.

Where most management training goes wrong

A lot of training is a day of slides, a folder you never open again and a certificate. Everyone leaves buzzing on Friday and they're back to old habits by Wednesday.

Training sticks when it's about your people and your real situations. That's why every session I run is built around your team. We work on the actual conversations your managers are putting off, not made-up case studies about a company that doesn't exist. And everyone leaves knowing exactly what they're doing differently on Monday.

What working with me looks like

  • A half day, a full day or a short programme over a few months
  • At your workplace or a venue in Dorset (Wimborne, Bournemouth, Poole and beyond), and I'm happy to travel
  • Small groups, lots of practice, plenty of laughter, and nobody gets put on the spot in a way that makes them want the floor to swallow them up
  • A clear proposal and price before anything is booked

I've trained teams at Utility Warehouse and spoken at the STA conference, Womanifest and Bournemouth Chamber events. Every room is different, and that's the point.

Is management training worth it for a small business?

Think about what it's costing you right now. The hours you spend sorting out problems your managers should be handling. The good person who leaves because their manager never had the conversation. The days off you don't take because things wobble when you're not there.

One well-run day of training usually costs a lot less than one good person walking out of the door.

Questions people ask me

Do you only work with big companies? No. I work with small and growing businesses, franchise networks and local organisations as well as larger teams. If you've got people who manage people, we can talk.

Can you train just one or two managers? Yes. Sometimes that works better as 1:1 coaching than a group session, and I'll tell you honestly which makes more sense for you.

Do you work outside Dorset? Yes. I'm based in Wimborne and work across Dorset, Hampshire and the South West, and further afield for the right team. Online sessions work well too.

How much does management training cost? Every session is quoted around what you need: the size of the group, how long, and what you want to change. You'll get a clear proposal and price before anything is booked.

Let's talk about your managers

If you've got someone brilliant who's struggling to lead, or you're tired of every problem coming back to you, drop me a message. Tell me what's going on and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help.
